To meet employer demand for skilled workers, Bucks County Community College offers metalwork training, a free program for those who are unemployed or underemployed. The training, which focuses on metal fabrication fundamentals, begins Monday, Nov. 5, at the college’s Advanced Manufacturing Training Center, located at 310 George Patterson Boulevard in Bristol. The training is free for those who qualify through PACareerLink. Those who complete the program receive individual job-placement assistance.

To learn more, prospective students must attend one of two mandatory information sessions. The sessions take place from 1 to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 18 and Tuesday, Sept. 25 at the Epstein Campus at Lower Bucks, located at 1304 Veterans Highway in Bristol.

The program introduces students to the fundamental concepts and hands-on skills required in manufacturing and a variety of industries. Students will receive a certificate of completion, plus a NIMS, OSHA10 and Forklift Safety Training certification.

Representatives of local companies looking to hire skilled workers will be on hand to answer questions and help select candidates for the program. The ideal candidate is someone who likes to work with their hands, problem-solve and is looking to start a new career. Efforts will be made to connect those who successfully complete the program with local employers. The job-placement rate of past graduates is more than 92 percent.

To be eligible for the program, participants must be a U.S. citizen or possess a Green Card; be at least 18-years-old; have a high school diploma or GED; pass an aptitude test, drug screening, background check and physical test; and have reliable transportation to commute to training and to a variety of industry field trips.

Interested students must attend an information session on Sept. 18 or 25 to apply to the program. The 12-week training program consists of four days a week in class, and one day a week off-site for company hours.
