Adoption fees reduced for cats at Women’s Humane

There will be an $8.88 adoption special at the Bensalem-based shelter on Wednesday, Aug. 8 in celebration of International Cat Day

The Women’s Humane Society will run an $8.88 adoption special on Wednesday, Aug. 8 in celebration of International Cat Day. The price will apply to all cats one year and older in an effort to encourage potential adopters to open their hearts to animals in immediate need of new homes.

“The number eight symbolizes infinity, and infinity symbolizes forever. We thought playing on this theme for International Cat Day would be a fun way to find forever homes for our shelter cats,” said Sue Durphy, adoptions and lifesaving supervisor for the Women’s Humane Society. “The $8.88 fee includes spaying or neutering, vaccines, microchip, flea and tick treatment, and free follow-up services in our veterinary hospital. It is a small price to pay for a lifetime of love.”

Like most animal shelters throughout the region and around the country, the Women’s Humane Society experiences a marked increase in animal intake and owner surrenders every summer, while at the same time facing the challenges of decreased adoption interest as public focus turns to travel and vacations. This issue is exacerbated in the case of cats, as the summer season is also the height of “kitten season,” when shelters are flooded with litters of homeless, nursing kittens.

“Fortunately, we have a great foster network in place to help us care for our kittens during this difficult time of year and typically our kittens find new homes fairly quickly once they become available for adoption,” said Jack Griffin, director of shelter services. “It is our growing population of adult and senior cats who we are striving to help with this promotion. Older cats are independent and mellow, and make wonderful companions. But they can also have trouble finding the new homes they need, and are passed over time and again for kittens or younger cats.”

In addition to the Aug. 8 International Cat Day $8.88 adoption special, the Women’s Humane Society will be offering reduced $28.88 fees on all adult cats for the remainder of the week.

The Adoption Center is open Wednesday through Thursday from noon to 6:30 p.m.; Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Adoption applications and photos of some of the currently available animals can be accessed online.

About the Women’s Humane Society

Founded in 1869 as the First Animal Shelter and Adoptions Program in America, the Women’s Humane Society offers a variety of services to the Greater Philadelphia region, including dog training classes, physical rehabilitation, and humane education programs for community groups of all ages.

As part of its mission, the Women’s Humane Society Animal Hospital provides low-cost veterinary care to families in need, making pet ownership affordable and thus keeping more animals in their homes and out of shelters. Hospital services include annual wellness exams, vaccinations, sick exams, diagnosis and treatment, spaying/neutering, x-rays, bloodwork, dental procedures and more. All proceeds raised through veterinary service fees support the shelter of the stray, abandoned and abused animals that come into the Women’s Humane Society’s care.
