Boy Scout Troop and Cub Scout Pack 212 and the Margaret R. Grundy Memorial Library, 680 Radcliffe Street in Bristol, are teaming up again this summer to assist neighbors who are struggling with food insecurity and hunger.

The goal is to collect 1,500 pounds of nonperishable foods to replenish the shelves at the Bristol Borough Community Action Food Pantry, 99 Wood Street in Bristol.

During regular business hours, food donations can be brought to the library through Saturday, Sept. 15 for collection by the Boy Scouts. To encourage participation by individuals of all ages, The Grundy Foundation has offered a $2,500 challenge grant to benefit the pantry. To meet the challenge, 1,500 pounds or more of food must be collected. This is a great opportunity to support families and growing children who might otherwise go hungry when school is out for the summer.

Greatly needed are breakfast cereals and foods, and protein-rich foods such as meat ravioli in tomato sauce, canned salmon and tuna, canned beans, dry beans and soup. However, all nonperishable foods are gratefully accepted.

Limited neighborhood food collections will be conducted by Boy Scout Troop and Cub Scout Pack 212 on Saturday, Aug. 25 beginning at 10 a.m. On Saturday, Aug. 11, Bristol Borough homes located in the Harriman area, as well as the area from Walnut St. to Lincoln Ave., between Pond and Radcliffe Streets, will receive a plastic bag and donation flyer with details ahead of the collection date.

Other food donations can be made at the library, or as always, directly to the Bristol Borough Community Action Food Pantry. Pantry business hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday; and Friday from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The pantry is closed Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

At the library, there is a food collection box located inside on the main floor of the building for donations during open hours: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday; and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The library is closed Sunday. Donated items will be transported to the Bristol Borough Food Pantry by Boy Scout Troop and Cub Scout Pack 212 during the event. Monetary donations can only be accepted through a check, and should be made out to “Bristol Borough Community Action Group.”
