Silver Lake Nature Center announces upcoming events

From a Firefly Hike to kayaking, there’s plenty to do at SLNC this month

The Times

Summer Solstice Firefly Hike will take place Thursday, June 21 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. End the longest day of the year with a summer solstice celebration. SLNC will welcome summer by finding fireflies along the trails, followed by a campfire at the Earthship. Cost is $8 for members, $10 for non-members. Please register at SilverLakeNatureCenter.com or by calling 215–785–1177.

Pond Study and Earthship Lab will take place Saturday, June 23 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Join SLNC interns Sarah and Maz for a closer look at some of the tiny creatures that live at the center. Attendees will have the chance to be a scientist during this one-and-a-half hour program that involves collecting macroinvertebrates from the edges of the lake and further examining them under microscopes at the Earthship Lab. Cost is $2 for members, $3 for non-members.

Kayak Fishing (Advanced) will take place Saturday, June 30 form 9 a.m. to noon. This new course is offered for advanced kayakers who like to fish. During these three hours, SLNC will go over the basics of kayaking, how to properly handle a fishing rod in a kayak and, of course, spend time fishing in Silver Lake. Each kayaker will be able to cast their line in multiple spots and must be able to bait their own hooks. Kayakers are welcome to bring their own rods and bait. Any fish not in season will have to be released. A fishing license is required. Cost is $30 for members, $35 for non-members. Please register at SilverLakeNatureCenter.com or by calling 215–785–1177.

Introduction to Kayaking will take place Saturday, June 30 from 3 to 5 p.m. Have you ever wanted to learn how to maneuver a kayak? Here is your chance. This two hour class, led by kayaking instructor Melanie Pawlowski, introduces attendees to the parts of a kayak, how to hold and move a kayak paddle, how to enter and exit a kayak, ways to keep balance while kayaking and, of course, how to get around the water in a kayak. This class takes place right on the waters of Silver Lake. Cost is $25 for members, $30 for non-members.

Full Moon Kayaking will take place Saturday, June 30 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. This kayak excursion is for those who have kayaked at least once before. Attendees will start at the edge of Silver Lake and, once in the water, travel up Silver Lake into Magnolia Lake, where they’ll dock on the island in the middle. On the island, there will be a campfire and roasted marshmallows. Afterward, the group will embark on its journey back, letting the moonlight guide its way. Each kayaker will be able to take in the lovely sights of Silver Lake bathed in moonlight. All must be 18 or older to participate. Cost is $30 for members, $35 for non-members.
