State Rep. Frank Farry was recently named 2017 Humane Legislator of the Year by the Humane Society of the United States for being a leading animal protection advocate in Pennsylvania. Farry’s dog, Bulmers, joined him on the podium to accept the award.

The surprise award presentation took place during a rally for animal protection on the Humane Lobby Day. The annual advocacy event draws hundreds of animal advocates and several canine guests from across the state to the Capitol to urge lawmakers to support stronger animal protection laws.

“As an animal lover, I am honored and grateful to receive this recognition from the Humane Society of the United States, which does great work on behalf of all animals,” Farry said. “We have been successful in passing major animal welfare initiatives in Harrisburg the last few years, but there is more work to be done to ensure our animals are properly safeguarded from abuse and neglect.”

Farry received the award for his legislation (Act 10 of 2017), which offers immunity from civil suits to humane society police officers, and his Motor Vehicle Extreme Heat Protection Act (House Bill 1216), which would prohibit the confinement of a pet in an unattended vehicle in a manner that would endanger the health and well-being of the animal.

Kristen Tullo, Pennsylvania state director, Humane Society of the United States, said, “Rep. Farry and his civic-minded pup, Bulmers, heightened awareness for the importance of animal protection laws, and garnered bipartisan support and momentum to push animal protection bills through the legislative process. Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition on behalf of your friends at the Humane Society of the United States.”

The Humane Society of the United States is the nation’s largest animal protection organization — backed by 11 million Americans. ••
