The Times
2018 is officially underway, which means many of us have renewed those gym memberships and taken up that hobby we swore we would master last year. But behind the scenes, millions are dusting the cobwebs off their resumes. Jan. 1 represents a clean slate when it comes to employment. It’s a chance to either kick-start a new career or advance within a current one.
To help locals take that leap forward and fulfill their resolutions, RecruitmentQueen, a resource for job seekers and employers in Bucks County, will host its fourth annual New Year Job Fair on Jan. 17 at the Oxford Valley Mall.
Similar to previous RecruitmentQueen job fairs at the Neshaminy Mall and other local areas, an estimated 500 jobs will be available in a vast variety of fields. Opportunities include financial services and health care, just to name a few.
According to Jennifer Schultz, RecruitmentQueen CEO and president, dozens of exhibitors will be present, giving attendees ample chances to find a position and company that suits their individual skill sets and experience levels.
A number of businesses have already committed to exhibit at the fair, including Pennswood Village, Penn Community Bank, Friends Hospital, PA CareerLink, Wexler Packaging, Vertical Screen, Salute2Service, TMA Bucks, Sykes Enterprises, Robert Half, The First National Banks & Trust Co. of Newtown, Fox Subacute, Green Drop Charitable Donations, Northwestern Mutual, Fred Beans Family of Dealerships and Sunrise of Lower Makefield.
Both Schultz and the mentioned companies understand a job search can be stressful, and for many attendees, this may be their first experience navigating a job fair. To help alleviate some nerves and help job seekers feel as prepared as possible, they’ve shared some useful advice.
“Bring plenty of copies of your resume,” said Melissa Spadaccino, senior HR generalist at Pennswood Village. “Proofread your resume prior to handing it out to employers. It is important to make sure that proper spelling and grammar is used. Resumes should clearly outline current and previous employment experience, including starting and ending dates.”
In addition to a polished resume, Spadaccino encourages job seekers to confidently introduce themselves when they approach each table. They should be specific about the type of work they’re looking for, whether it’s full-time, part-time, days, evenings or weekends.
Finally, she encourages attendees to be prepared to speak about their employment background, understanding how their past experience can serve potential employers. If they’re able to articulate this information, she explained that it will make a positive impression.
For job seekers considering a position with Pennswood Village, 1382 Newtown-Langhorne Road in Newtown, the senior living community will be recruiting at the fair for full-time and part-time CNAs, part-time RNs and part-time LPNs. It will also be looking for part-time servers, part-time lifeguards, a full-time cafeteria assistant and full-time housekeeping.
Schultz also had a few helpful tips for those planning to attend. Though the atmosphere of a job fair is more laid back than an official interview in a corporate office, job seekers should still dress and act the part of an interviewee. The event takes place at a mall, but they shouldn’t approach a table with a Macy’s bag in hand.
Reiterating the message of Spadaccino, Schultz encourages attendees to go into the job fair with a career, position and level in mind, as well as some background knowledge on the companies they plan to approach. If they can touch on a particular business’ mission and the roles it has available, it will show the recruiter they took the time to do some research. ••
