The Times

Winter Primitive Survival Skills: Fire Program will take place on Saturday, Jan. 27, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The snow date is Saturday, Feb. 3. Join Lenape Village educator Joseph Boyle for a full day of primitive skills for wintertime.

The day will be spent making fire from scratch with natural materials. Guests will learn about and make fire bows, coal extenders and fire structures. The day includes an introduction to building shelter and basic cordage. Participants will go home with their own homemade fire bow kit.

Attendees must be ages 13 and above and able to do moderate physical work. Participants will need a knife for carving wood, safety gloves and glasses, a notebook and warm clothing. Pre-registration is required. Cost is $75. Save $10 each if you enroll two or more people at the same time.

Winter Walks will take place on Jan. 27, Feb. 17 and March 17, at 2 p.m. Join the staff as they explore the changing seasons. Winter is a quiet time when much of nature is dormant, but there’s still plenty to explore. Cost is $3 per person for non-members and free for members.

Adult Basketry will take place on Sunday, Jan. 28, from 1 to 5 p.m. Learn how to weave a round serving basket in time for Valentine’s Day. This basket is about 8 inches in diameter and 4.5 inches high. This workshop is intended for the adult weaver, but suitable for beginners.

All materials are included though if you have them, please bring an awl or flat head screwdriver for adjusting reeds, knife to sharpen the ribs and heavy duty scissors or diagonal wire cutters to cut the reed, needle nose pliers and ruler.

Cost is $30 per person. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. The instructor will be Chris Applegate, CNC educator.
