WirePOLITICS: Congressional candidate criticizes Obama for Paying $400 million to Iran

Tom Waring, the Wire

Brian Fitzpatrick, the Republican candidate in the 8th Congressional District, released a statement following last week’s news that the Obama administration paid $400 million (and $1.3 billion in interest) to Iran just as four Americans who were being detained in Tehran were released.

“As a former FBI Supervisory Special Agent focused on combating terrorism, it is unconscionable that the administration, in its attempts to advance the misguided nuclear deal with Iran, would deliver, literally, a plane full of money to Tehran — the world’s largest state sponsor of terrorism,” he said. “It is no secret what this $400 million, delivered in foreign currency, behind the backs of the American people and in defiance of U.S. law, will go toward: increased support for groups like Hezbollah and the continued exportation of terror around the globe. Moreover, the paying of ransoms to terrorists and their state sponsors puts our national security at risk and threatens the safety of Americans abroad.

“The Iran nuclear deal was rejected by Congress and the American people, yet the administration continues to show how far they will go to support a country who oppresses its own citizens and advocates for the destruction of Israel as well as all western democracies. Simple disagreement with this fatally flawed deal is not enough.”

Fitzpatrick faces Democrat Steve Santarsiero, a state representative. He called on his opponent to join him in advocating for the reversal of the Iran nuclear deal.
