WirePOLITICS: Santarsiero gets Pennsylvania Professional Fire Fighters Association endorsement

The Pennsylvania Professional Fire Fighters Association has endorsed state Rep. Steve Santarsiero in the Democratic primary in the 8th Congressional District.

“In the state House, Steve has been a champion for public safety workers and a devoted voice for active and retired firefighters across Pennsylvania, and that’s exactly the type of leadership we need in Congress,” said PPFFA President Art Martynuska. “Steve understands the sacrifice our first responders make every day, he’s had our backs, and we are proud to endorse his run for Congress.”

Santarsiero faces Shaughnessy Naughton in the April 26 primary.

“I’m proud to have the support of the brave first responders that risk their lives to keep our communities safe day in and day out,” he said. “In Congress, I’ll fight to make sure they have the support and resources to keep us safe and retire with the dignity and security they clearly deserve.”

Santarsiero has also been endorsed by Gov. Tom Wolf, the Bucks and Montgomery County Democratic parties and over 20 labor unions.

Meanwhile, Santarsiero was among the members of PA SAFE, a group of state lawmakers and firearm-safety advocates, who held a news conference announcing their mission and outlining legislation they support to combat gun violence.

Members of PA SAFE said that they will fund mental health services and resources to curb effects of addiction and illegal drugs.

The group also announced a new web site, www.PaHouse.com/PaSAFE.

Citizens can send emails to House and committee leaders requesting action.

“Right now in Pennsylvania, a criminal can purchase an assault rifle even though it is illegal for that same criminal to purchase a handgun,” said Santarsiero, who is the prime sponsor of Universal Background Check legislation. “That is something that needs to be fixed now, before the next tragedy strikes. We are here today because we have chosen to act. We are a coalition that is more representative of our community than the NRA, and we will prevail.”
