Former Gov. Mark Schweiker has endorsed state Rep. Scott Petri in the Republican primary in the 8th Congressional District.
“I am happy to endorse Scott Petri to represent us in Congress,” Schweiker said, “Scott will be a principled voice in Washington, D.C. who will be able to rise independently above the partisan bickering and work for solutions to our nation’s problems. Scott has a track record of working to grow our economy. He has been a supporter of infrastructure improvements, and ensuring that Pennsylvania’s business climate is one that will allow companies to expand and create new jobs for our neighbors. Scott’s experience will make him an effective leader and advocate for our region in Congress.”
Schweiker is a former Middletown Township supervisor and Bucks County commissioner. In 1994, he was elected lieutenant governor. When President George W. Bush selected Gov. Tom Ridge to oversee homeland security after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, Schweiker became governor.
Petri, a lawyer, lives in Upper Makefield Township with his wife, Ellen, and their son, Drew.
Other Republicans running for Congress are former Bucks County Commissioner Andy Warren and attorney Dean Malik.
On the Democratic side, the candidates are state Rep. Steve Santarsiero and Shaughnessy Naughton, a scientist and publishing company owner.
Republican Rep. Mike Fitzpatrick is not seeking another term.
