WirePOLITICS: Fitzpatrick to host information session for students

Tom Waring, the Wire

U.S. Rep. Mike Fitzpatrick (R-8th dist.) will host an information session for Bucks and Montgomery county students seeking nominations to United States Service Academies on Saturday, Sept. 26, from 9 a.m. to noon.

The session will be held at the Bucks County Community College Newtown campus in the Gallagher Room.

Fitzpatrick and his staff will be joined by representatives from the U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Military Academy at West Point, U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Coast Guard Academy and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. There also will be representatives from the Reserve Officers Training Corps, together with cadets and midshipmen who can talk about their experiences in the different programs.

“I encourage students who are interested in applying for a nomination to one of our nation’s military service academies to join us on the 26th,” Fitzpatrick said. “This session will provide important guidance through what can be a long and, at times, difficult process towards earning an academy nomination. I look forward to meeting with students from the 8th District interested in serving their country in the armed forces.”

The 2015 class included 25 nominees with recommendations to four service academies. Recommendations are assisted by Fitzpatrick’s nomination committee, which includes active duty and retired military members from the 8th District.

“Events like Representative Fitzpatrick’s Service Academy Information Day are absolutely integral to our military for fostering relationships with families of the 8th District. Not only does this event give us the opportunity to meet with our current group of promising young candidates seeking nomination, it allows us to pass on valuable information to future candidates and their families,” said retired Navy Admiral Stephen Chadwick, a member of the nomination committee. “Some students do not consider the service academies or ROTC until high school, while others maintain lifelong ambitions of attending one of our military’s elite programs. Either way, functions like these ensure that we can help these promising young people achieve their dreams.”

While the session is primarily intended for high school seniors and their parents, sophomores and juniors seeking more information are also encouraged to attend. For more information, students should visit fitzpatrick.house.gov/AcademyNominations or call Anthony Nisivoccia at 215–579–8102.

Fitzpatrick is serving his fourth and final term in the U.S. House of Representatives. The 8th district includes all of Bucks County and a portion of Montgomery County.
