State Rep Steve Santarseiro announced his support for Newtown Township attorney Jerry Schenkman as the next district judge to serve Newtown Township, Newtown Borough, Wrightstown and Upper Makefield Township.
A 1976 graduate of Rutgers University School of Law, Schenkman has been practicing law in Pennsylvania and New Jersey for nearly four decades.
Santarsiero said that supporting Schenkman was “an easy choice.”
“Jerry has the real-world experience we want and need from our district judge,” Santarsiero said. “His experience, coupled with his integrity, fairness and compassion — even while making tough decisions — makes him a great candidate for the job.”
The Newtown Township Democratic Club has endorsed Schenkman in the May 19 primary.
“I’m humbled by the overwhelming support I am receiving from state Rep. Santarsiero, the Newtown Township Democratic Club and local residents I have had the opportunity to meet,” Schenkman said. “I take great pride in the opportunity to serve my community as the next district judge.”
In his law practice, Schenkman specializes in district court, workers’ compensation and personal injury.
In addition to his law experience, Schenkman served six years as a Newtown Township supervisor, beginning in 2006.
Cross-filing is permitted in the race. Schenkman and fellow Democrat Karen Quinn join Republicans Mark Zlock and Mick Petrucci on the Democratic ballot.
Quinn, Zlock, Petrucci and Republican Shawn Ward are in the GOP ballot.
The endorsed Republican candidate is Petrucci, a state constable and president of the Newtown Business Association.
The candidates are vying for the seat previously held by District Judge Donald Nasshorn, who died suddenly in December of brain cancer. He was 61 and had served for 27 years.
