International Association of Fire Fighters and Paramedics Local 22 has endorsed Anne Covey, an Upper Makefield, for Pennsylvania Supreme Court in the May 19 Republican primary.

“IAFF Local 22 takes great pride in selecting the best candidates to endorse, who will best serve the residents of Pennsylvania and specifically the firefighters, paramedics and EMTs of our commonwealth,” said Jack Eltman, political director for Philadelphia-based Local 22.

“I am grateful for the support of the first responders at Local 22,” Covey said. “We all rely on the bravery and dedication of these men and women every day, and it is an honor that they are supporting my candidacy for Supreme Court.”

Covey has been a judge on Commonwealth Court since 2012. She is best known as the trial judge in the case of Corman v. NCAA. Covey authored the opinion that ruled the Endowment Act constitutional and kept $60 million of Penn State funds in Pennsylvania.

Prior to her service as judge, Covey served on the Pennsylvania Labor Relations Board as the first female member.

In 2014, Covey was cited by the Legal Intelligencer as authoring three of the top seven opinions by the Commonwealth Court in that year.

Meanwhile, Firearm Owners Against Crime has recommended Covey for election to the Supreme Court.

“I firmly support all of our individual rights in our Constitution and pledge to protect those rights,” Covey said. “I am grateful to earn the support of FOAC and many other groups throughout Pennsylvania who are working to protect individual rights.”

Covey was elected to Commonwealth Court in 2011. She is one of six Republicans running for three Supreme Court openings. She is married with two children.
