‘Crystal’ clear meditation

It’s a big planet, said Rina Elyce. “And, I want to have some of all of it.”

And, at her store in Hatboro, her formidable collection is on display. A walk through Rina’s Rocks is like a trip around the world: Aztec suns, Far East statues, Arkansas quartz. And, of course, fossils and the crystals that are the foundation of the shop.

But there’s more to the world than what’s on it — and this weekend, Elyce is giving couples (and singles) the chance to find it. Just in time for Valentine’s day, Rina’s Rocks is hosting a Twin Meditation on Feb. 15.

“The idea is to feel at peace with yourself,” Elyce explained. “Relaxed, grounded and full of love and serenity.”

The meditation session will feature “guided” meditation, where an expert host leads the group through ideas and visualizations to help them reach a state of deep relaxation. Adding to the ambience will be the Zen Sessions, a Bucks County trio that uses keyboards, flutes, singing bowls and indigenous percussion and other instruments to create ethereal, exploratory music to help people enter a meditative state.

The Valentine-themed event is a little something different for Rina’s Rocks, but nothing too far out of the ordinary: the shop hosts weekly meditation sessions in the back, along with reiki and card readings.

It’s all part of the world Elyce discovered, starting with her personal cache of crystals that she began collecting more than two decades ago.

“I started collecting because they were beautiful,” she said. “Then I started using them for healing purposes.”

Crystals like the ones at her store are thought to have healing properties. People like Elyce harness the frequencies they emit to assuage anything from physical pain to mental anguish to challenges with addiction.

Elyce said she discovered this after she had a knee injury 15 years ago. “I had a piece of quartz that I’d wear. It helped with the pain,” she recalled.

But that was well before the meditation sessions and reiki. In fact, it was before Rina’s Rocks even existed. Elyce started out at 263 Marketplace, the indoor marketplace that used to reside on York Road in Warminster.

She was making her own jewelry at the time, and planned to sell her wares there. “But they said they had enough jewelry and asked if I had anything else,” Elyce said.

So she began selling her crystals instead. As interest grew, so did her business, until she relocated twice into bigger spaces before settling into her current location on York Road in Hatboro.

In her newer space, Elyce is able to include more programming. Her weekly meditation regularly draws around 30 people a week, but the twin meditation is new.

New, and simple.

“I just sort of decided on it,” she said.
